Requirements to Become a Certified Counsellor in Canada
CCPA states that must be a CCPA member prior to applying for certification and that they must:
Hold a graduate-level degree based on a coherent program in counselling or a related professional field demonstrate evidence of a minimum of eight (8) graduate-level courses in specific areas of study, from an acceptable institution of study:
- Counselling Theories
- Supervised Counselling Practicum
- Counselling and Communication Skills
- Professional Ethics
- Four (4) elective courses which meet CCPA’s coursework areas
Have direct practice experience accumulated either through path one or two :
- Pathway One:
Applicants who graduated from their counselling program within the past five years apply based on their supervised counselling practicum placement comprised of a total of 150 hours of direct client counselling (only 120 hours are required for applicants who graduated prior to September 2013).
2. Pathway Two:
Applicants who have sufficient experience in the field of counselling, characterised by a minimum of three years of full-time equivalent (FTE) hours of practice within the past ten years (ie, 4500 hours).
