Professional development (PD) is a process of ongoing growth, through involvement in programs, services, and activities designed to enable counsellors, both individually and collectively, to enhance professional practice.

- Courses/workshops (e.g. on subject matter or methods and/or other counselling-related topics)
- Education conferences or seminars
- Qualification programme
- Participation in a network of other professionals
- Individual or collaborative research on a topic of professional interest
- Mentoring and/or peer observation and coaching, as part of a formal workplace arrangement
- Reading professional literature (e.g. journals, evidence-based papers, thesis papers)
- Engaging in informal dialogue with peers
